Moving to Heathfield East Sussex?
If you are then here’s a short round up about Heathfield…
Heathfield is a small market town and the principal settlement in the civil parish of Heathfield and Waldron in the Wealden District of East Sussex.
Heathfield lies near the junction of two main roads: the A267 which runs between Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne, both towns being about 16 miles away; and the A265 from Hawkhurst.
Heathfield lies on the ancient trackway know as The Ridgeway, which connected the South Downs with the Weald. Heathfield’s market charter was granted in 1316 during the reign of Edward II. During the 16th and 17th centuries Heathfield prospered from Wealden iron and the construction of the Cuckoo Line in 1880 also gave the town an economic boost. The branch line between Eridge and Polegate closed in 1968 after the line became uneconomic. The trackbed is now named the Cuckoo Trail and is part of the National Cycle Network.
The original village is Old Heathfield and is now only part of the town.
Events
The town holds an annual fair named the Hefful Cuckoo Fair each April. The Heathfield Show in May is the largest one day agricultural show in the country. Le Marche on the August bank holiday Monday is a market with French and English traders and entertainment.
Education
Heathfield is the home of Heathfield Community College, which has a catchment of Mayfield, Burwash, Waldron and Herstmonceux.
